The government-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud on Thursday gave approval for granting citizenship of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to "a number of distinguished people with rare expertise and specialisations,"

The approval comes "in light of the royal order to open the door to naturalise [grant citizenship to] legal, medical, scientific, cultural, sports and technical specialists in a way that contributes to promoting the wheel of development and benefits the country in various fields," SPA reported.

Which fields of expertise are eligible?
According to Saudi English website, Arab News, the fields of eligible experts include “forensic and medical science, technology, agriculture, nuclear and renewable energy, oil and gas, and artificial intelligence, in addition to specialists involved in arts, sports and culture".
How can someone apply?
They can’t. Saudi Gazette reported "Granting citizenship to a limited number of such personnel will be through nomination based purely on public interest and there won’t be any option to submit applications," Saudi Gazette reported.
In January, the UAE offered citizenship to select categories including "investors, doctors, specialists, inventors, scientists, talents, intellectuals, artists and their families".
