Azerbaijan's Victory After Diplomatic Agreements

Following persistent deadlock, Azerbaijan garnered support from Eastern European nations, notably securing an agreement with Armenia, its neighboring rival, signaling peace after territorial conflicts over Nagorno-Karabakh.

The COP28 presidency sources indicated that Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is poised to be the confirmed host, with expectations set after the recent pivotal meeting.

Energy-Driven Nation in the Spotlight

This decision directs the COP gathering, encompassing 198 parties, to a nation significantly reliant on fossil fuel production for the third consecutive year.

Azerbaijan's Record and Fundamental Talks

Elin Suleymanov, the Azerbaijan Ambassador to the UK, highlighted Baku's history of hosting major events such as sporting tournaments and the Eurovision song contest, asserting its capability to manage the substantial demands of the COP summit.

Suleymanov further emphasized Azerbaijan's energy transition efforts, referencing a recent agreement to establish an electricity cable under the Black Sea, aiming to provide wind power to multiple countries including Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary.

This significant shift of the COP conference to Azerbaijan, a nation historically rooted in the oil industry, signifies both a milestone in diplomacy and an opportunity to discuss energy transition strategies on a global platform.
