Bahrain is preparing to integrate health insurance costs into the tourist visa process. Visitors will contribute to health coverage for emergency and accident-related care through an added fee during their visa application. This policy has received initial approval from the Parliament’s Services Committee and is set for further discussion on Tuesday.

Flexible Fee Structure
The original proposal suggested a fixed BD5 charge per tourist visa. However, the fee has been adjusted to align with Bahrain’s Health Insurance Law of 2018. Instead of a flat rate, the cost will vary based on the specific health coverage required, ensuring that visitors pay a fair amount for their insurance during their stay.
Legal Framework and Implementation
Under Article 28 of the Health Insurance Law, tourists must pay health insurance fees during their visit. Additionally, Article 35 stipulates that visas cannot be issued or renewed without proof of payment. While the Supreme Council for Health (SCH) was consulted on the proposal, their feedback was not received before the committee’s October 5 discussion.
Streamlining Health Coverage for Tourists
This initiative is part of Bahrain’s broader efforts to integrate visitors into the national health insurance system. The Services Committee has confirmed that the proposal aligns with existing regulations, with additional measures being planned to ensure effective implementation.
