The Southern Municipality has approved several proposals aimed at improving infrastructure and everyday living in the Southern Governorate. These include stricter parking rules for commercial buildings, efforts to manage abandoned homes, and cultural upgrades in public areas.
More parking now required in new buildings
One major change is a new rule that requires developers of commercial buildings to provide at least two parking spaces per apartment. The move aims to ease the constant parking struggle in residential areas and reduce arguments between neighbors over limited space.

Abandoned homes to become parking spaces
To further tackle parking shortages, the council also backed a plan to turn abandoned houses in the fourth district into parking lots. This isn’t just about space—it's also a way to stop these empty buildings from turning into potential safety risks or being misused.
Cultural upgrades coming to Hajiyat Street
The municipality also gave the green light to redesign the Hajiyat Street roundabout with landscaping and decorations that reflect traditional Arab culture. The area will feature cultural icons like the dallah (coffee pot) and falcons, aiming to give the space a stronger local identity and visual appeal.
Waste bins to get designated spots
Another approved change will require all new commercial buildings to have a dedicated space for garbage containers. This is meant to improve cleanliness and keep bins from cluttering shared spaces or being randomly placed on sidewalks.
The overall goal of the new proposals is to create a cleaner, more organized, and more community-friendly environment for residents across the Southern Governorate.
