Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian died in a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan Province. The crash occurred in mountainous terrain under heavy fog, resulting in the deaths of all on board.
Rescue Efforts Hampered by Severe Weather
Rescue teams faced blizzards and difficult terrain as they worked through the night to locate the wreckage. The crash site was identified by a Turkish drone, which detected heat signals. Despite the challenging conditions, the Red Crescent and armed forces continued their search efforts near Varzaqan region.
No Survivors Found
Pirhossein Kolivand, head of Iran’s Red Crescent, confirmed on state TV that there were no signs of life at the crash site. "We can see the wreckage, and the situation does not look good," he stated.
Details of the Crash
The helicopter was carrying President Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian, East Azerbaijan Province Governor Malek Rahmati, and Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, among others. They were returning from a dam inauguration ceremony near the Azerbaijan Republic border when the crash occurred.
Mobilization of Rescue Teams
In response to the incident, 46 rapid response and rescue teams from various provinces, including East Azerbaijan, Tehran, and West Azarbaijan, were dispatched. These teams combed the rocky and foggy terrain despite adverse weather conditions.
