For the first edition of Inc. Arabia’s video series, we have Rami Osman, Director for Business Development, MediaTek Middle East and Africa, to talk about consumer technology, emerging markets, and AI.

MediaTek is a global fabless semiconductor company that enables nearly 2 billion connected devices a year. MediaTek is the market leader in developing innovative systems-on-a-chip (SoC) for smartphones, home entertainment, connectivity, and IoT products. MediaTek’s innovation has positioned it as a driving market force in several key technology areas, including highly power-efficient smartphone technologies, automotive solutions, and a broad range of advanced multimedia products such as smartphones, tablets, digital televisions, 5G, Voice Assistant Devices (VAD), and wearables. MediaTek is working with the brands you love to make great technology accessible to everyone.

The Tech Behind Your Tech

MediaTek provides innovative technology behind devices like smartphones, smart TVs, and Wi-Fi routers and collaborates with players across the electronics value chain, including operators and OEMs. MediaTek powers some of the biggest brands globally and is committed to deliver cutting-edge innovations with its latest products and solutions. It develops chipsets for flagship and high-end products as well as mid-range to entry-level, specialized products for consumer electronics providers like Sony, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Samsung, among others.

In addition to providing the chipsets, MediaTek provides OEMs with a reference design, explaining to them how to put it all together on the board. It also provides the basic version of the software to help cut the R&D time and optimize the costs. MediaTek designed the Dimensity 5G Open Resource Architecture (DORA), which helps OEMs to provide their consumers with customized experiences and make their flagship and premium 5G smartphones stand out.
To facilitate adoption of 5G technology, MediaTek launched Dimensity 8300, a chipset that will allow for AI integration and innovation on high-end smartphones. MediaTek also launched 5G RedCap, which includes the M60 modem IP and the MediaTek T300 chipset series, facilitating the transition to 5G-NR for wearables, lightweight AR devices, IoT modules, and other devices built for Edge AI.

MediaTek’s portfolio also includes the Wi-Fi-enabling Filogic series, ushering towards a new era of smart Wi-Fi 6/6E and Wi-Fi 7 solutions with extreme speeds, low latency, superb power efficiency, and EasyMesh certification for smoother, always-connected experiences. In November, MediaTek launched the second generation of Filogic chipsets to deliver Wi-Fi 7 speeds, optimizing performance and reliability.

MEA as the Last Frontier of Growth

MediaTek services GCC markets, which have a high demand for high-end smartphones, many of which utilize its flagship TSMC 4-nanometer-class smartphone chip.

Osman tells us that MEA, a region with more than 70 countries and 1.8 billion people, is “the last frontier of growth,” with a great deal of potential because of the size of the market and the rapid growth of its population. The diversity of the region is reflected in MediaTek’s solutions, with advanced markets in the GCC seeking high-end, cutting-edge technologies, and emerging markets in North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa looking for $30 phones that can act as a gateway to the world.

MediaTek collaborates with telecom operators and OEMs across the MEA region to increase internet penetration in underserved markets. In Egypt, it has collaborated with Telecom Egypt on a government initiative called Haya Karima, which aims to increase internet penetration. The project utilizes MediaTek DSL, GPON and Wi-Fi chipsets.

Each year, MediaTek expands focus to effectively target its consumers in the region, and this year, its focus is smartphones. “Many people in the Middle East and Africa region don't have TVs or laptops with fixed internet connections at home, so mobile is probably their first window to the world,” says Osman.

MediaTek has a range of connectivity products that cater to different kinds of users, ensuring equitable access. Working in a region like MEA provides MediaTek with the opportunity to innovate solutions for technology, product, and consumer outreach.

MediaTek has introduced Helio G Series, a solution developed specifically for enhancing the mobile gaming experience. Osman highlights that chipsets like the Helio G series, which is popular among gamers, have put MediaTek on top-of-mind for users, driving MediaTek to build identities for its brands that consumers can relate to.

Bringing AI to the Edge

MediaTek is also at the forefront of the AI revolution which is currently sweeping the world. MediaTek’s IoT range includes flagship products like the Genio 1200, a flagship system-on-a-chip (SoC) with 6-nanometer design that drives performance and provides advanced multimedia and efficiency for Edge computing and Edge AI applications. It also includes the entry-level Genio 700, an Edge-AI IoT platform for smart home, retail, and commercial applications that caters primarily to emerging markets.

MediaTek recently launched its flagship Dimensity 9300 chipset, which maximizes smartphone efficiency, with a supercharged SoC (system-on-a-chip) to support generative AI on-device processing, moving AI processing from the cloud to the Edge. This allows for the processing of time-sensitive data and facilitates access in remote locations with limited or no connectivity.

In August, MediaTek collaborated with Meta’s Llama 2, Meta’s open-source Large Language Model (LLM), to give developers access to generative AI platforms with their chipsets, easing the load of CPUs and traditional APUs.

Leveraging this collaboration, MediaTek aims to build a complete edge computing ecosystem that will accelerate the application of AI development on smartphones, IoT, vehicles, and smart homes, among other edge devices. This will transfer Generative AI from the cloud to devices, improving performance, optimizing privacy and security, and increasing reliability. It will also allow users to work offline.

MediaTek Empowering Smart Vehicle Technology Innovations

MediaTek’s latest Dimensity Auto for automotive platform drives the future of intelligent, always-connected vehicles by delivering impressive computing power and wide-ranging technologies.

MediaTek partnered with NVIDIA to provide a full-scale product roadmap to the automotive industry. The collaboration combines the strength of each company’s automotive portfolios to deliver the most compelling solutions for state-of-the-art connected cars.
