In a pivotal political development, Nawaf Salam has been named the new Prime Minister of Lebanon.
Salam, a seasoned diplomat, judge, and former ambassador to the United Nations, has been entrusted with the challenging task of leading the nation through one of its most tumultuous periods.
Salam secured the position after receiving the support from 84 MPs when they held binding consultations with the newly elected President Joseph Aoun on Monday, Jan. 13.
The director General of the Presidency, Antoine Choucair, announced the result and confirmed that the newly elected PM will arrive in Beirut on Tuesday.
Salam's opponent Najib Mikati received nin votes only, while 35 MPs abstained from voting.
Salam, 71, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He served as Lebanon's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2007 to 2017 and is currently the President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in Hague.
