Former chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata, passed away at the age of 86 after a prolonged illness on Wednesday, Oct. 9 in Mumbai, India.

The industry legend was at a hospital in Mumbai in critical condition since Monday, Oct. 7. Initially, Tata dispelled rumors about his ill health and assured everyone that he was only going through routine medical checkups in an official statement released on social media. 

However, reports emerged earlier on Wednesday that Tata was in critical condition. The release of an official statement about his health was promised on Friday, however, the industrialist passed away late on Wednesday. 

Ratan Tata, the visionary industrialist and philanthropist, was one of India’s most respected business leaders.

As the former chairman of Tata Sons, he transformed the Tata Group into a global powerhouse, overseeing the expansion into diverse sectors like steel, automobiles, IT, and hospitality. Under his leadership, iconic acquisitions like Jaguar Land Rover, Corus Steel, and Tetley Tea elevated the brand's international presence.

Beyond business, Ratan Tata was celebrated for his commitment to philanthropy, focusing on education, healthcare, and rural development in India.
