'Laapata Ladies' Chosen as India's Entry for Oscars 2025

The Indian film 'Laapata Ladies', directed by Kiran Rao, has been chosen as India's official entry for the 2025 Oscars, the Film Federation of India announced on Monday, Sep. 23.

The 2024 comedy-drama was chosen from a list of 29 films, which included the Bollywood hit 'Animal', Malayalam National Award winner 'Aattam' and Cannes' Grand Prix winner 'All We Imagine As Light'.
The 13-member select committee, headed by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, unanimously selected 'Laapata Ladies' to be submitted for the 'Best Foreign Film' category at the Oscars, which was produced by Bollywood star Aamir Khan and the film's director Rao.
Rao shared her happiness on social media in a heartfelt note, saying, "I am deeply honored and beyond delighted that our film 'Laapataa Ladies' has been chosen as India's official entry to the Academy Awards. This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life."
The film selection also included the Tamil film 'Maharaja', Telugu titles 'Kalki 2898 AD' and 'Hanu-Man', and Hindi films 'Swatantraya Veer Savarkar' and 'Article 370'.
'Laapata Ladies' features the stories of two brides in rural India in 2001 who are accidentally swapped on a train. The film featured Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav in the lead roles and received critical acclaim upon its release.
Before its release in March this year, 'Laapata Ladies' premiered at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2023.
