Microsoft recently announced that it will shut down the video-calling service Skype in May this year.
Skype made the announcement on X, saying "Starting in May 2025, Skype will no longer be available".
It added, "Over the coming days, you can sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with your Skype account to stay connected with all your chats and contacts. Thank you for being part of Skype."
Skype was one of the world's most popular video-calling services, allowing individuals to make voice or video calls via computers to loved ones for free.
The video-calling platform was first released in 2003, and Microsoft bought it for $8.5 billion in 2011. Skype eventually became integrated into Microsoft's Xbox and Windows devices.
However, after the introduction of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, Skype's popularity started declining.
In 2017, Microsoft redesigned Skype, but its users did not like the updated version. When Windows 11 was launched, Microsoft Teams was integrated by default, but Skype was not.
It was the beginning of the end, which led to Microsoft's recent decision.
