The victory was determined by a mere five-thousandths of a second, with Lyles narrowly beating Jamaica's Kishane Thompson. American Fred Kerley took bronze with a time of 9.81 seconds.
Lyles and his competitors had to wait anxiously for the photo review to confirm the winner. Initially, Lyles himself thought Thompson had secured the victory. "I did think Thompson had it at the end," Lyles admitted. "I went up to him when we were waiting and said, ‘I think you got that one, big dog.’ When my name popped up, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m amazing.’"
The packed Stade de France erupted in cheers as the announcement confirmed Lyles as the champion. He is the first American to win Olympic gold in the men's 100m since Justin Gatlin's victory at the 2004 Athens Games.
Reflecting on his achievement, Lyles said, "It's the one I wanted, the hard battle, the amazing opponents. Everybody came prepared for the fight, and I wanted to prove that I'm the man among all of them, I'm the wolf among wolves."
Lyles entered the Olympics with high confidence, having run a personal-best 9.81 seconds last month. He expressed his ambition to win multiple Olympic gold medals, and his victory in the 100m marks the first step toward achieving that goal. This gold medal is Lyles’ first Olympic victory, adding to his bronze in the 200m from the Tokyo Olympics and his six-time world champion titles.
For Noah Lyles, this Olympic gold in the 100m is likely the crowning achievement of his illustrious career so far.
