In an unexpected turn of events, OpenAI announced on Wednesday, Nov. 22 that it will reinstate Sam Altman as CEO of the artificial intelligence company days after being fired from the position.

OpenAI's decision has come about after intense discussions amongst OpenAI's former board of directors and Altman.

This discussion came about when more than 95% of OpenAI employees signed a letter calling for Altman's reinstatement. 

OpenAI made the announcement on their X page, saying "We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO."

Open AI: New Board of Directors

In the announcement, OpenAI also shared the names of the members of the new board of directors under whose supervision Altman will run the company.

The new board of directors will include:

  • former Salesforce chief executive Bret Taylor as chair.
  •  former US Treasury secretary Larry Summers
  • Adam D'Angelo, existing OpenAI board member and the chief executive of Quora

Sam Altman Returns to OpenAI as CEO

In response to this announcement, Altman wrote on his X page "With the new board and with Satya’s support, I’m looking forward to returning to [OpenAI], and building on our strong partnership with [Microsoft]."

Sam Altman was hired by Microsoft on Monday, Nov. 20 to lead their artificial intelligence research team after he was sacked from OpenAI.

Nonetheless, with OpenAI, he is committed to strengthening the company's partnership with Mircrosoft. 

Greg Brockman's Return to OpenAI

Along with Altman, Greg Brockman was hired as well, however, he will also return to OpenAI. 

Brockman also shared the news on X, saying, "Returning to OpenAI & getting back to coding tonight."

OpenAI says it is " collaborating to figure out the details" with Altman, but the company already responded to Altman and Brockman's annoucements of return with heart emojis.
