Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, announced that the gold, silver, and bronze medals will include fragments of scrap iron from the Eiffel Tower. He explained, "It’s the opportunity for the athletes to bring back a piece of Paris with them." The Eiffel Tower, designed by Gustave Eiffel and opened in 1889, is an enduring symbol of Paris and France.
Historical Iron Repurposed
Over the years, the Eiffel Tower has undergone several renovations, during which some original iron was removed and preserved. These metal fragments have now been shaped into hexagons, representing the geometric shape of France, and incorporated into the Olympic medals.
Design and Details
The new medals feature pieces of Eiffel Tower iron, stripped of the tower’s signature brown paint. They are engraved with "Paris 2024," the Olympic rings, and the Games logo, which resembles either a flame or the face of a woman with a chic bob haircut.
Front and Back Designs
The Olympic and Paralympic medals share the same front design but differ on the back. The Olympic medals show Nike, the goddess of victory, holding the Olympic torch, while the Paralympic medals display a view of the Eiffel Tower.
Historical Significance
Paris last hosted the Olympics in 1924. Back then, the medals featured images of Olympians shaking hands. This year's design brings a piece of Paris’s iconic history into the hands of the world's top athletes.
