Time Magazine declared Taylor Swift as its Person of the Year for 2023, a decision announced a week after Spotify revealed her status as the most-played artist on their platform.
Swift emerged as the chosen individual from a list of nine finalists, including figures like Barbie, King Charles III, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Describing Swift's impact, Time noted that at 33, she achieved a unique fusion of art and commerce, generating a historic force of energy. The recognition takes into account her year filled with successes, including the immensely popular Eras Tour and concert movie, the release of her reimagined '1989' album, and her widely followed relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
Time also highlighted her influence extending beyond music, such as her involvement in the box office and a visit to Rio's iconic Christ The Redeemer.
Time's editor-in-chief, Sam Jacobs, further elaborated on the rationale behind Swift's selection, emphasizing her ability to transcend borders and serve as a source of light. Jacobs praised Swift as a rare individual who is both the author and protagonist of her narrative.
In a conversation with Time, Swift expressed her satisfaction with the impact she had in 2023, describing it as the proudest and happiest moment of her career. She emphasized her creative fulfillment and sense of freedom. Swift posed a rhetorical question, drawing from Russell Crowe's famous line in "Gladiator": "Are you not entertained?"
“This is the proudest and happiest I’ve ever felt and the most creatively fulfilled and free I’ve ever been,” she told Time Magazine.
