Laylatul Qadr, or The Night of Decree, is the holiest night of Ramadan, described in the Quran as "better than a thousand months" (Surah Al-Qadr 97:3). It is a night of unparalleled mercy, blessings, and forgiveness. Muslims around the world spend these last ten nights of Ramadan in worship, seeking Allah’s forgiveness and mercy through prayer and supplication.

One of the most well-known and frequently recited duas on this blessed night is:

اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني
Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni
"O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me."

The History of This Dua

This powerful supplication has its roots in a conversation between Aisha (RA), the beloved wife of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and the Prophet himself. She once asked:

"O Messenger of Allah, if I realize which night is Laylatul Qadr, what should I say in it?"

The Prophet (PBUH) responded with this concise yet deeply meaningful dua, emphasizing seeking Allah’s forgiveness above all else. (Tirmidhi 3513, Ibn Majah 3850)

Throughout history, scholars and believers have repeated this dua as a reminder that no matter how many mistakes one has made, Allah’s mercy is vast, and His forgiveness is limitless. The word "‘Afuw" used in this supplication refers to complete erasure of sins, meaning that when Allah forgives, He removes all traces of wrongdoing, as if they never existed.

Why This Dua Matters

Laylatul Qadr is the night when the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and it is believed that on this night, the destinies of people for the coming year are decreed. Seeking forgiveness through this dua is a way to start fresh, purify the heart, and draw closer to Allah.

Muslims around the world spend this night in deep prayer, Quran recitation, and supplication, repeating this dua with sincerity, hoping to be among those who are freed from the Hellfire and granted eternal mercy.
