A pair of supermoons are expected to light up the skies around the world in August.

A supermoon appears when a full moon coincides with the Moon being at a point in its orbit closest to the earth.
This happens because the lunar orbit is not a perfect circle, as a result, the full moon appears larger in the sky.
The first supermoon will appear on the night of Aug. 1 and it is known as the sturgeon moon.
At the time of the appearance of the sturgeon moon, the moon will be 357,530 kilometers away from the earth.
The second supermoon will grace the skies on the night of Aug. 30 and it is known as the blue moon.
During the appearance of the blue moon, the moon will be 357,344 kilometers distant from the earth.
The last time that two supermoons appeared in the same month was in 2018.
The next time that two supermoons will appear in the same month will be 2037, according to Italian astronomer Gianluca Masi, founder of the Virtual Telescope Project.
The brightest supermoons in 2023 are set to appear in August at the height of summer.
