Bahrain King Pardons 340 Inmates Under New Penalty Program

Bahrain is making significant progress in reforming its justice system as part of a royal initiative to enhance the Alternative Sentencing Law. Recently, the General Directorate of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing has changed the sentences of 340 inmates at the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre, allowing them to benefit from alternative sentencing options.

Increased Participation in Alternative Programs

Along with the sentence replacements, 99 additional inmates have joined the Open Prisons Programme. Since the introduction of the Alternative Sentencing Law, a total of 7,441 inmates have benefited from these reforms, which aim to promote rehabilitation over punishment.

Collaboration for Successful Implementation

The selection of inmates for alternative sentencing was done in coordination with the Public Prosecution, and the list of candidates has been sent to a judge for final approval. Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa, the Director General of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing, emphasized the importance of these reforms in upholding human rights in Bahrain. 

He acknowledged the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in helping reintegrate these individuals into society. The Ministry of Interior has also stressed the need to expand the application of the law, focusing on providing training and rehabilitation services essential for successful reintegration.

The Director General expressed gratitude to all organizations involved in the alternative sanctions programs, which play a vital role in helping beneficiaries gradually return to society. This initiative marks a significant step towards a more compassionate and effective justice system in Bahrain, demonstrating a commitment to human rights and rehabilitation.
