Bahrain Proposes BD600 Minimum Wage for Private Sector

MP Mariam AlSayegh has introduced a legislative proposal aimed at tackling low wages and high unemployment in Bahrain’s private sector.

Minimum Wage for Bahrainis

The proposal sets a minimum wage threshold of 600 Bahraini dinars per month for Bahraini workers. Employees earning less than this amount will be excluded from the mandatory Bahrainisation quotas, ensuring a fair living wage.

Increasing Local Employment

To boost the employment of Bahrainis in the private sector, the proposal incentivizes companies to hire local talent at competitive salaries, reducing reliance on foreign workers.

Preventing Subsidy Abuse

The law includes measures to prevent companies from exploiting wage subsidies provided by the Tamkeen Labour Fund. Companies must repay subsidies if they lay off Bahraini workers without just cause after the subsidy period.

Legal Protections for Workers

The proposal aims to protect Bahraini workers from unfair dismissal, ensuring greater job security and stability.

Encouraging Compliance

Provisions are included to withdraw licenses from companies that fail to meet the required Bahrainisation quotas, encouraging compliance and the retention of Bahraini talent.
