Does Taking a COVID-19 Vaccine Break Your Fast?

The UAE Fatwa Council announced on Thursday that taking the Covid-19 vaccine is permissible in Islam and does not invalidate fasting.

Shaykh Abdallah bin Bayyah chaired a virtual discussion over the Fiqh of fasting, including the guidelines, rules and regulations derived from the rulings laid down in the Holy Quran and the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the Sunnah.

The council reviewed the religious rulings in regard to the preventive and precautionary measures in place to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, primarily those related to the arrangements of Iftar meals and Ramadan tents as well as Al Taraweeh prayers.

A statement will be issued by the council during the next briefing on Covid-19, state news agency WAM reported.

The UAE government holds Covid-19 briefings each Tuesday.

The beginning of Ramadan is anticipated on April 13, but the date depends on the moonsighting because the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle.

UAE has administered over 8 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine since a nationwide immunisation drive began in December.Last month, the UAE announced nationwide restrictions for the holy month.
