Grieving Families in Bahrain Could See Utility Bills Waived

In a move that could bring relief to grieving Bahraini families, a parliamentary proposal is calling for unpaid utility bills to be scrapped if the family’s head passes away. Spearheaded by MP Khalid Bu Onk and five other lawmakers, the initiative aims to end what they describe as an "inhumane" practice of forcing widows and children to shoulder debts left behind by their deceased breadwinners.

Currently, families can face electricity and water bills reaching up to BD3,000, accumulated over years. “Grieving widows and children shouldn’t be burdened with instalment plans or face account transfer threats,” stressed Bu Onk. He called for the introduction of a special fund to cover such bills, likening it to the Housing Ministry’s existing system that waives remaining payments upon the breadwinner’s death.

This compassionate proposal aligns with a previously floated idea by the Northern Municipal Council to insure utility accounts. The insurance, akin to bank loan protection plans, could safeguard families from financial distress in times of loss.

With over BD128 million still owed to the Electricity and Water Affairs (EWA), this initiative isn’t just about financial strategy; it’s about humanity. It seeks to spare grieving families further anguish, offering a dignified resolution during their darkest times.
