Rasha Yousif Makes History as First Bahraini World Traveler

Rasha Yousif from Bahrain has officially made history by traveling to every single country in the world! From diving into 193 United Nations-recognized nations to exploring 197 countries with observer status and over 207 territories with limited independence, Rasha’s incredible journey is nothing short of legendary.

A Pioneering Spirit

Rasha is not only the first Bahraini woman to achieve this milestone but also the first hijabi woman to explore the globe on this scale. Her remarkable feat stands as a shining beacon for Bahraini women everywhere, showcasing resilience and an adventurous spirit that knows no bounds. Rasha’s travels celebrate her dedication and passion for exploration while setting a vibrant global example for future wanderers.

A 12-Year Adventure

Over the span of 12 years, Rasha embarked on a quest that took her to the far corners of the earth. Armed with her camera and fueled by curiosity, she captured breathtaking moments and built meaningful connections along the way. In her own words, “After a few photo tours, I realized I enjoyed traveling to meet people, learn about different cultures, and hear their stories.”

Overcoming Challenges

Proud of her accomplishments, Rasha reflected on the challenges she faced, which bolstered her confidence and gave her what she describes as a "superhero feeling." She believes her journey exemplifies the passion for achievement that Bahrainis are known for and highlights the creativity and resilience of Bahraini women striving for recognition on a larger stage.

Rasha Yousif acknowledged Maryam Sultan of Kuwait, who in 2024 became the first Arab woman to complete a similar journey, highlighting a supportive regional travel community.

Beyond Borders

Embracing an organic approach, Rasha’s journey included not only officially recognized countries but also territories with unique cultural identities, such as Palestine. “It’s not about lists; it’s about history, culture, and meeting people,” she emphasizes. As a proud Muharraqi, Rasha represented her Bahraini identity by staying true to herself and incorporating elements of Bahraini hospitality into her travels, like gifting tokens to families and communities she visited.

A Journey Full of Lessons

Of course, Rasha's journey wasn’t without its hurdles. She faced visa issues, logistical challenges, and even had a day stranded at an airport, reminiscent of the film The Terminal. Each trip demanded careful planning, from finances to physical and mental preparation. While she often traveled solo, she sometimes enlisted local guides for insights.

Her journey was self-sponsored, and there were moments when financial challenges almost disrupted her plans. To overcome this, she turned to her online community and set up a photo gallery for supporters to purchase prints. This innovative approach not only helped her financially but also demonstrated the power of community in achieving seemingly impossible goals.

Throughout her travels, Rasha documented her experiences on social media, primarily Instagram, allowing her followers to feel like they were part of the adventure. By the time she reached her final destination, she felt a sense of collective achievement, stating, “It felt amazing to have so many people witness my journey from the beginning.”

Now that her incredible journey is complete, Rasha is focusing on her travel business, which specializes in guided tours to unique destinations in West Africa and Latin America. She is also considering documenting her experiences in a book and photo exhibition to continue inspiring and educating others.
