Bahrain Teams Up with UN-Habitat for Major Parks Makeover

UN-Habitat Bahrain is teaming up with the Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture and Budaiya Hub to assess and enhance public parks across the country. This initiative aims to improve park accessibility, comfort, and green cover while gathering valuable data for future planning.

Key Findings and Goals

- Limited Access: Less than 15% of Bahrain’s households have a park within a 400-meter walking distance.

- Green Cover: Many parks have under 30% green cover, indicating a need for more vegetation.

Volunteer Effort

Thirty volunteers, including young professionals and students, are surveying all 154 parks in Bahrain. They are gathering data on facilities, accessibility, and ecological aspects, and have been trained in sustainable urban development.

Expert Insights

Dr. Fernanda Lonardoni, Head of UN-Habitat Bahrain, highlighted the value of parks: “Better park accessibility improves the environment, health, and provides essential recreational and inclusive spaces. The assessment will guide us in enhancing these public areas.”

Initial Recommendations

- Expand Park Land: Allocate more space for parks to support community well-being and environmental sustainability.

- Enhance Urban Communities: Develop vibrant, sustainable urban areas in Bahrain.

Looking Ahead

This assessment is part of a larger effort by UN-Habitat and the Bahraini government to advance sustainable urban development and improve public spaces. The complete results, including community-driven design suggestions, are expected by the end of the year.
