Bahrain to Use ID Cards as Travel Documents

Bahrain has taken a major step in its digital transformation efforts with the launch of three new government projects aimed at improving online services and security. Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa inaugurated the initiatives during a visit to the Information & eGovernment Authority on Friday.

ID Cards as Travel Documents

As part of the new digital strategy, the government is working to make ID cards function as travel documents. The Interior Minister instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nationality, Passports, and Residence Affairs (NPRA) to integrate ID card and passport data while coordinating with other countries to recognize them as valid travel credentials.

New Self-Service Centers

Bahrain has also introduced a self-service center featuring six digital platforms that offer a range of government services, such as identity updates and electronic payments. This move aligns with the country’s 2023-2026 digital transformation strategy and aims to make government services more accessible to citizens 24/7.

Advanced ID Cards

The government is also rolling out a new and improved ID card equipped with advanced security features and a modernized design that meets international standards. The Interior Minister inspected the progress of the ID Card Service Centre and received updates on the development phases of the new cards.
