British Airways Reverses Bahrain Flight Cancellation

In a significant move, British Airways has decided to reverse its previous decision to cancel flights to Bahrain. The airline had initially planned to end daily flights to Bahrain and Kuwait by the end of March 2025, citing issues with the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines on its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet.

However, after widespread backlash from both UK politicians and the Bahraini government, British Airways made a U-turn. The airline announced that it would continue operating a direct service between London and Bahrain three times a week starting in the summer of 2025. In fact, this change will actually increase the number of services, with daily flights resuming in the near future.

Why the Change?

The initial decision to suspend the Bahrain route caused an international uproar, especially since the Bahraini government was not consulted before the announcement was made. The timing of the move was particularly sensitive, as it coincided with Bahrain’s King Hamad’s visit to the UK, where he was hosted by King Charles III in celebration of his silver jubilee year.

While flights to Kuwait will still be suspended as initially planned, British Airways has left the decision under review, leaving some hope that the route could be reinstated in the future.

Stronger Bilateral Ties

The London-Bahrain route is seen as a key connection between the UK and Bahrain, supporting both cultural exchange and economic ties. The Bahrain Airport Company celebrated the airline’s decision to maintain the service, noting that it reinforces the longstanding relationship between the two nations.

“This partnership not only fuels economic growth but also enhances convenience for travelers on both sides,” the Bahrain Airport Company stated in response to the news.

A Historic Connection

British Airways’ ties to Bahrain go back nearly a century. The airline has been flying to the island for 92 years, with its predecessor, Imperial Airways, making the first flight in 1932. Even more notably, on January 21, 1976, British Airways’ Concorde made its inaugural commercial flight from London Heathrow to Bahrain International Airport. The historical connection between the UK and Bahrain is strong, with Bahrain having been a British protectorate for over 100 years before gaining independence in 1971.
