Car Drives into Crowd in Munich, Injuring At Least 28

At least 28 individuals were injured after a car drove into a crowd of people in Munich, southern Germany, on Thursday, Feb. 13.

The car driver was a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker who was arrested at the scene. The motive for the incident is unknown.

The driver drove into a rally of the trade union Verdi on a day of public sector strikes in Munich and Germany.

One shot was fired at the car from behind after it accelerated into the crowd. The incident occurred ten days before the German elections in which security and immigration have been key campaign themes after a series of violent incidents involving asylum seekers.

The incident occurred on Dachauer Strasse, the longest street in Munich, and 1.5 kilometers away from the security conference.

The area of the incident has been cordoned off and the police said that the injured individuals were taken care of by rescue services.

The fire service spokesman Bernhard Peschke shared that several victims were seriously injured "and some of them are in a life-threatening condition".
