Exiled Syrian Leader Bashar Al Assad Allegedly Poisoned

Al Assad has been in Russia, under the protection of Vladimir Putin since Dec. 8, 2024.

According to the online account General SVR, allegedly managed by a former Russian spy, Al Assad fell ill on Sunday, Dec. 29, when he started coughing and choking terribly.

He received medical treatment in his apartment and his condition stabilized by Monday, Dec. 30. Medical tests reportedly confirmed the presence of poison in his system.

The Russian authorities have not confirmed the incident or the reported investigation of the matter.

Al Assad and his family have been in Moscow since December after the rebel-uprising in Syria led them to flee their country. His wife, Asma, has been barred from travelling to the UK despite having a UK passport.
