Palestinian Journalist Bisan Owda Wins an Emmy Award

Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda, from 'It's Bisan from Gaza, I'm Still Alive', won an Emmy Award for an 'Outstanding Hard News Feature: Short Form' at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards on Wednesday, Sep. 24.

Some weeks ago, the pro-Israeli lobby group The Creative Community for Peace signed an open letter, calling to remove Owda from the nominations. 

The open letter was signed by celebrities like Debra Messing and Selma Blair, reasoning that Owda's past association with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which is considered a terrorist organization in the US. 

Five days before Owda' win, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced that it would not cancel Owda's nomination, which led the journalist to win the award. 

The award was received by the senior executive producer of AJ+ Reports Jon Lawrence. Upon receiving the award, Lawrence said, "This award is a testimony to the power of one woman, armed with only an iPhone, who survived almost one year of bombardment."

Owda also received a Peabody Award earlier this year for her journalistic efforts in Gaza during the ongoing war.
