For the next 42 years, he worked as a painter, moving between various places in Manama to survive. His situation remained largely unknown until 2020, when he was detained following a dispute with another expatriate. This incident shed light on his plight, drawing the attention of the Indian expatriate community and the Pravasi Legal Cell (PLC), a Delhi-based NGO that advocates for the rights of Indians facing injustice abroad.

The Struggle for Justice

In a heartfelt Facebook post, the PLC shared Chandran’s story, which resonated deeply with many. “In 1983, Chandran left his small village full of hope and dreams. But when his employer passed away and his passport was lost, he became trapped in a foreign land for 42 long years,” the post read.

The team at PLC, led by Sudheer Thirunilath, worked tirelessly with the Embassy of India in Bahrain and the Kingdom’s Immigration Department to secure Chandran’s return. Their efforts paid off, and Chandran was finally able to board a flight home, armed only with memories, tears, and the dream of reuniting with his family.
